We all do things to ourselves that aren’t particularly good for us. We beat ourselves up; we make ourselves feel guilty; we make others happy at our own expense. The list is endless. Thing is, we forget to take care ourselves. We live with ourselves more than anyone else, so why do we do that?
Here are 26 things to stop doing to yourself RIGHT NOW.
1. Don’t spend time with the wrong people
We often care too much about what other people think of us, and sometimes we put a ton of effort into having them in our lives. If the person really cares about you, they’ll make time and room for you. The people who matter the most are the people who are there during the worst parts of your life, not the best.

2. Stop sweeping your problems under the rug.
Or, in essence, stop running from your problems. You can’t fix something unconsciously because it just doesn’t work like that. Instead, focus and try your best. Do you remember solving a complex calculation instantly? Most of us don’t and life is the same way. Facing these problems is what will eventually make you who you are.

3. Stop lying to yourself.
Lying to yourself is the worst thing you can do because you’ll trick yourself into doing things that hurt you. Be honest with yourself and your life will improve drastically.
4. Stop putting your needs last.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking care of others and doing good for them, but when it comes at the expense of yourself then you’re doing yourself a disservice. Don’t forget: you’re special, too!
5. Stop being someone else.
Look. You are who you are and that’s how it’ll always be. Stop trying to be something else that you aren’t. The world is always trying to make people more similar, something they really aren’t. You have to be prettier, stronger, younger, etc. There are products that push this and media that reinforce it. In the end, be who you are. If you love and respect yourself then people who deserve you will love you.

6. Stop living in the past.
Imagine if you only read a single chapter of a book? Where would that get you? Nowhere, right? The past is the past. It’ll always be a part of who you are but don’t let it prevent you from who you could become.
7. Stop being afraid of mistakes.
There’s that old adage, “one steps forward, two steps back.” That’s what happens when you fear mistakes. Stop right now. It’s okay to make mistakes because it helps you learn and grow. No one says it better than good ol’ Theodore Roosevelt:
8. Stop beating yourself up.
EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES. That’s a simple fact of life. Why are you continually forcing yourself to suffer for something that happened in the past? We all end up loving the wrong person, making people cry, and everything in between. It’s these mistakes that help us find the right person and make the right choices in the future. Learn from your mistakes and let it shape you. Don’t let your mistakes be you. Instead, use them to be someone better.

9. Stop trying to buy happiness.
Sure, we could all be happier with more money, but nothing makes us happier than the free things. Think about the best moments in your life. It’s probably laughing with friends or doing crazy stuff with your siblings.
10. Stop relying on others for happiness.
If you can’t be happy with yourself, how can you expect anyone else to be happy with you? You’ll always be your #1 fan, your biggest supporter and advocate. You need to have a stable life before you can truly be with anyone.
11. Stop shilly-shallying
Most people are indecisive, but you have to learn to take control and take action. It’s once you work outside of your comfort zone that you truly start to see results.

12. Stop being in relationships for silly reasons.
Louis C.K. said it best: people are afraid to be alone. Deal with it. What’s the rush? So what if you’re 25 or 30 and you’re still single? Modern society has made us think we need to be in love, right now, at this very moment, regardless of age. When it happens, it’ll happen. Don’t force a relationship that doesn’t work so you don’t have to be alone.
13. Stop basing new relationships on old relationships.
So your old ones didn’t work. So what? Don’t damn your current or future relationship because a past one was problematic. Certain people you meet will always teach you something. Take your old experiences and improve on your new ones.
14. Stop being so competitive with others.
There will almost always (keyword “almost”) be someone better than you. In the end, your life is about you. If you want to better yourself then beat yourself. That’s all that really matters.

15. Stop being jealous.
You’re giving up your own happiness for what? We all can’t have what we want but be grateful for what you currently have.

16. Stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself.
Not everyone has a great life and EVERYBODY has problems. That’s a part of life. At that moment, it’s hard to be rational and reasonable because we’re overwhelmed with negative feelings. Next time, though, just smile. Think about past negatives and how they led you to a happier, better you.
17. Stop holding grudges.
“Forgive and forget.” We’ve heard it a hundred times yet very few people ever apply it to their lives. Why live with so much disdain in your heart? The only person you’re hurting is yourself. Forgiving someone means not letting something someone did ruin your happiness. This isn’t for other people but you, too. Just let go. You’re better off and you’ll never be happier.
18. Don’t let others bring you down.
People will always do this because they can’t raise themselves up. Don’t let anyone ever make you feel bad about yourself. Always strive to be better and you’ll never be brought down by the unmotivated.

19. Stop explaining yourself.
No one will ever understand your actions like you do. They’ll simply judge you, and it becomes an endless circle that will end with you in frustration. Whatever you think is right, you should do.

20. Stop repeating without taking a step back.
If you’re constantly engrossed in something, how can you know what you’re doing is right? Sometimes you need to take a step back so you can see everything else clearly.

21. Stop missing the little victories.
Some of the best moments in your entire life will be the little moments, like when you’re gathered around the TV watching New Girl while laughing hysterically. Appreciate them. Those things tend to be bigger than we think.

22. Give up perfection.
There’s no such thing. People who get things done will always trump those who deem themselves “perfectionists.”

23. Stop taking the easy way out.
Remember, as a kid, when you beat that really, really hard level in a video game and there was that small moment of absolute and total euphoria? That’s what you get when you take the hard way. I’m not saying to ALWAYS take the hardest path, but sometimes you just need to get out of your comfort zone and do something daring and unexpected. Stop being so comfortable. Do something incredible.

24. Stop being happy when you aren’t.
Let yourself feel sad emotions and breakdown. It’s okay. You don’t always have to be the happiest person alive nor do you have to be the strongest. If you need to, cry. The sooner you deal with it, the sooner you’ll be able to be your happy self again. Don’t bury things and let them fester.

25. Stop worrying so much.
Worrying does nothing for you except remove you from your present state of happiness. When there’s a problem to deal with, deal with it when it occurs. There’s no sense to preemptively worry. Will it matter down the road? If not, let it go. We all deal with problems, so why waste your happiness on something as meager as a fine?
