Last night was he 87th annual Oscars Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. If you recall, last month the expectations for the Academy Awards were low after the nominations were announced and it was revealed that many Black actors and actresses failed to make the list. However, that didn’t stop some of Black Hollywood’s biggest name forms attending the ceremony and making their mark on the carpet- and on the stage- as some of the evening’s biggest performers.
In case you missed it, singer John Legend and rapper Common also won an award for ‘Best Original Song’ for Selma.
Check out some of our favorite looks recapped below!
Suited and booted actor Idris Elba took a page out of Common’s book and brought his gorgeous daughter Isan as his date last night to the Oscars. The father-daughter twosome were twinning as the 12 year old rocked a royal blue Reco Chapple custom gown to match daddy’s sapphire Ermenegildo Zegna suit. Later in the evening, Idris presented the ‘Best Cinematography’ Award.
Hot mama on board! Zoe Saldana arguably stole the carpet last night as the new mom looked stunning in all her post-baby glory. Accompanied by husband Marco, the usually slim and trim 36 year old actress rocked a beautiful Versace Atelier gown but its clear to see that it’s the star’s curves (courtesy of her new twin boys Cy and Bowie) that won the red carpet.
Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson looked dainty in a yellow Romona Keveza gown and her signature cute pixie cut. The star made her way down the carpet and later on to the stage as she stole the show with a bone-chilling performance of ‘I Can’t Let Go’ from Smash. The song was a tribute to the lives lost in 2014. “This is for all the people who shared their talent and their time with us. We are forever changed.”

Elsewhere, John Legend and his boo, Chrissy Tiegen of course hit the show. The actress donned an embellished Zuhair Murad powder blue gown with a plunging neckline and dark lip, while her Oscar winner husband and singer opted for a clean-cut Gucci suit for the evening. Rumor has it that Chrissy may be expecting after a few camera angles saw what appeared to be a belly under her dress. Hmmm…

The rapper sported a Prada suit to last night’s show and gave yet another riveting speech while accepting his ‘Best Original Song’ award for “Glory’ (off the Selma soundtrack) alongside singer John Legend.
Ava Duvernay was ravishing in this light blue Prada number detailed with Henri Sillam jewels. The director’s film Selma was nominated in two categories- ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Original Song,’ which John Legend and Common later took on behalf of the movie’s sound track. Ava Congrats Ava!
