It was a small glimpse of an Australian icon on the Apple stage in San Francisco that gave it away.
As Kevin Lynch, vice president of technology for Apple, demonstrated the Apple Watch at its launch event, a logo for Woolworths, an Australian supermarket chain, flashed up on the face of the watch.
In all its green-colored and apple-shaped glory, the Woolworths Apple Watch app was launched. Mashable has confirmed, with someone familiar with the development, the app will be released on the Apple Watch at the Australian launch date, April 24.
It is currently unclear what kind of app the Woolworths logo portends, but it doesn’t take a genius to suggest that shopping from your watch might be involved. The launch follows rumours earlier in the month that the supermarket chain had been given early access in a secret lab to the Apple Watch, where the company was testing its application.
It is rather surprising to find the two companies are working together, considering that Apple scolded Woolworths for its Apple-like logo in 2009.
No other apps have been confirmed for the Australian market as yet, although consumers are keen to see how the company will localise the watch.
