Drake’s Surprise Mixtape Sells Over 535K Units

State Farm All-Star Saturday Night - NBA All-Star Weekend 2014

The list of artists capable of successfully pulling a Beyonce is shorter than a, well, a list of artists capable of successfully pulling a Beyonce. But one name that’s definitely on there is Drake.

The OVO boss is celebrating today after landing atop the Billboard charts with his surprise mixtape, the cleverly titled, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.

Dropped digitally on Thursday night, the effort sold an impressive 535,000 copies in its first full three days out, making the tape gold plaque status right out the gate!

To compare with the woman whose name is now synonymous with surprise albums, …Already Too Late sold 82,000 copies less than Beyonce in that same time span, so Bey’s record still remains. But don’t cry for The Boy because …It’s Too Late was able to break Spotify’s record for most streams from an album in a debut week with over 17.3 million streams in three days.

There’s also speculation that the surprise release was actually a power play from Drizzy to fulfill his rumored four-album contract with YMCMB. Birdman’s Cash Money Records is currently entangled in a bitter court battle with Lil Wayne who reportedly wants to drop the CMB from YM and is suing Birdman for $50 million. As passive-aggressive as Drake is, the tape’s name may have been a shot at Birdman, as in “If you’re reading this, it’s too late because the album’s out and I’s free!” It’s also interesting to note that the album’s handwritten Thank You’s did not include Birdman or YMCMB.
