That’s the impression new artist Jidenna is giving us in his debut video “Classic Man” in which the debonaire, butterscotch player leads us through a day in the life of black excellence. As he stops to help some youths avoid trouble with the law and parties alongside beautiful, chocolate women at luxe soirées, Jidenna introduces us to his world as the leader of a new genre called “swank” (which he calls “an elegant and funky take on hip-hop”).
Jidenna is represented by Janelle Monae, who recently revamped her Wondaland Records company in a merger with Epic Records that allows her to develop new talent. And this new track serves as the lead single off a forthcoming Wondaland compilation album making Jidenna the Ja Rule to Janelle Monae’s Irv Gotti (or Whitney Houston to her Clive Davis, if you want to be classy about it).
The video, directed by Solange’s hubby Alan Ferguson (who makes a short cameo), shows off the vibe and aesthetic of Janelle’s new musical clique.
