Lakeland police arrested a man who they say was hospitalized after he injected himself with heroin while inside a bathroom at the Lakeland Police Department.
Police say Samuel Alicea, 35, entered the Lakeland Police Department at approximately 7:44 a.m. and went into the public restroom in the front lobby.
Shortly after, one of the front desk officers heard a loud “thump” sound from inside the restroom. The officer knocked on the door several times, concerned for Alicea’s safety, but he did not open the door.
Police were able to gain entry to the restroom using a key. They found Alicea on the ground, unconcious, bleeding from his arm. In the restroom sink they found measuring spoons, small plastic baggies commonly used to store drugs, and a syringe.
Alicea was transported to Lakeland Regional Health for treatment. The substance he injected himself with tested positive as heroin.
After being released from the hospital, Alicea was transported to the Polk County Jail. Police charged him with possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
