The film, to be produced by Judd Apatow, was announced in a post on Pee-wee’s blog. Paul Reubens, who made the character famous, partnered with Paul Rust (Arrested Development, Comedy Bang! Bang!) on the script, and John Lee (Inside Amy Schumer) will direct the movie. Production will begin in March.
Reubens will return as fun-loving Pee-wee who takes his first holiday after meeting a mysterious stranger.
“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that Pee-wee’s Big Holiday was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said.
Pee-wee’s Big Holiday will be the character’s first feature film since 1988’s Big Top Pee-wee.
Pee-wee Herman has grown into a franchise since its premiere at the Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles in 1981. Several Pee-wee Herman specials are already available on Netflix, including Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-wee Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Pee-wee’s Playhouse: Christmas Special.
