Puerto Rican Man Dressed Like Green Lantern At His Wake

A dead Puerto Rican man was recently gussied up like the Green Lantern. Yes, you read that correctly—a deceased man was dolled up by his family into green spandex and a face mask so he could look like his favorite super hero even in death.

Furthermore, said man was propped up against a wall (with green draping) so he could be viewed during his wake.

The New York Daily News reports:

He’s a superhero to his family.

Relatives of a recently deceased Puerto Rican man dressed him in a Green Lantern costume and propped him up at his wake after he spent the last weeks of his life donning the comic book disguise.

Renato Garcia, 50, passed away last week in the Rio Piedras neighborhood of San Jose, where friends and neighbors saw him wearing the costume for weeks after he found it in a bag of donated clothes, according to his sister.

As in life, so in death, she decided.

“He was always very helpful,” his sister, Milagros Garcia, told Primera Hora. “You beckoned and he was always there.”

A funeral is scheduled for Wednesday for Garcia, who suffered from respiratory issues.

The comic book hero was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 blockbuster “Green Lantern.”

Posing embalmed bodies at wakes and funerals is nothing new in Puerto Rico, where the practice has taken off. Georgina Lloren, 80, was posed in her favorite rocking chair after her death in San Jose last year.

The last wish of another man, Angel Pantoja Medina, was to stand at his own wake so in 2008, family members abided.

Christopher Rivera, a professional boxer, was stood up in the corner of a boxing ring and dressed up in his pugilists gear after his murder in 2014.

Another murder victim, David Morales Colon, was propped up on his motorcycle after he 2010 death.

And on a whole other level, Ohio man Bill Standley was embalmed, propped up on his Harley Davidson motorcycle and buried in a glass case after dying at age 82 last year.
