The trio of publisher fathers in their 40s, Jason Bramley, Steve Hanson and Jonny Biggins, have donned 33-pound baby bump suits to show solidarity with expectant mothers – and help promote their latest publication, The Book of Mums.
The men have been wearing the suits, which come complete with fake breasts and are designed to put pressure on the bladder, stomach and lungs, all day and night, and are only allowed to remove them to wash.
It’s given them some idea at least of the trials and tribulations of life during the third trimester of pregnancy, if their diary entries to date are anything to go by.
Bramley found the suit a shock to the system from the outset; on Day One he was already complaining. “I feel like the morning after a rugby match,” he wrote.
“I have aches in my back and sore shoulders. I certainly didn’t expect this after only one afternoon wearing the pregnancy suit.”
His wife wasn’t sympathetic, which he reflects might be down to his own lack of support during her pregnancy.
Three days into the experiment, Hanson was experiencing sleepless nights.
“Not a wink. What an awful night, I just couldn’t get settled,” he wrote. “Tried to make a small city out of pillows around my bump. What were at first quite a pleasurable novelty, my boobs, soon became about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit.”
Biggins quickly grew tired of his suit. “After five hours of wearing the pregnancy suit, initial jubilation has worn off,” he wrote, “and the reality has started to bite, nip and rub.”
“The velcro straps that support the suit chaff against your neck, the belly itself hangs so low it swings perilously around your mid-groin and to pee you have to hoike the thing up with one hand, pull the fella out with the other and pray you’re not urinating down your leg.”
“It’s funny that now i’m wearing the suit, my wife’s attitude turned from one of ‘that’s no substitute for my 9 months imprisonment’ to one of bemusement and pity.”
The trio are chronicling their ordeal for the next few weeks on their website.
