Two police officers have been shot in Ferguson, Missouri, as tensions escalated late on Wednesday evening and in the early hours of Thursday.

Initial witness reports coming out of Ferguson suggest one officer has been shot in the face. Lt. Col. Al Eickhoff of the Ferguson Police Department confirmed to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that two officers who are not believed to be from the Ferguson department have been shot.

It is not clear who the shooter is, but it is thought the shots were fired from a home across the road from the Ferguson Police Department, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Two ambulances have been photographed pulling up at the scene, away from the main protest area. It is believed at least one is on the way to a nearby hospital.

Witnesses posting to social media from the scene say police are in the area with their guns drawn.

This story is developing.
