LOS ANGELES — Some things are too blue to be true. Richard Madden’s eye color is apparently not one.
There is something eerily cobalt about the Cinderella (and former Game of Thrones) star’s eyes in the Disney film. Especially in the above photo, which shows Madden smiling, those irises and teeth gleam like sapphires and ivory, and it’s like he’s some fairytale Prince Charming or something. Jeez.
But here’s the thing. They’re real.
In a time when every frame of every major film is retouched, color corrected and scrubbed clean of all human imperfection, we have it on good authority that Madden neither wore colored contacts, nor were his eyes given any special treatment in post-production. That’s just how he is.
“He looks like a White Walker,” one reporter who had just returned from interviewing Madden at the Cinderella junket told me, after swooning about the Scottish actor’s accent, wit and charm in spades, as well as his saucy chemistry with co-star Lily James. Yep, there’s no Fifty Shades of Frosty, here:
Madden sported his baby blues when he played Robb Stark on GoT, but because of the show’s muted color palette, we just never got to see them in full dazzle mode. Like here, during that one wedding thingy:
A closer look in real life supports the official company line: Those princely peepers are based in reality.
The first official denial that Madden’s eyes were altered came from director Kenneth Branagh, who insisted during Cinderella press interviews that the “colored contacts” theory was out.
“He was not wearing blue contact lenses,” Branagh said. “He has very, very striking blue eyes, and when beautifully lit by [cinematographer] Haris Zambarloukos, these make for a very strong impact.”
When we pressed Disney about the more likely possibility that Madden’s eye color got a boost in post-production, the company’s denial was unequivocal (as it was with earlier accusations that James’ waistline was taken in a bit, which both the actress and studio deny).
So there you have it. In this fairy tale, at least, what you see is what you get:
Can you believe how dreamy Richard Madden’s eyes are? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments, below.
